The rare Hondius/D’Avity map of Asia, 1659

The rare Hondius/D'Avity map of Asia, 1659

Map title: Asia recens summa cura delineate.

Extremely rare & highly sort after map of the Asia published in Pierre D’Avity’s Les Etats published in Paris in 1659 and part of my collection. What is so rare about this map is that the engraver is anonymous and till this day, still unknown. Several of the cartouches in this set of 4 maps published by D’Avity have been left blank by the engraver. On the top right hand side of this map, note the blank , unfilled cartouche.

Shows the cities and key ports of Asia at that time across the top panel including Famagusta in Cyprus, Rhodes, Damascus, Jerusalem, Aden and Hormuz.

On the side panels, wonderful vignettes of the peoples of Asia – including Syrians, Arabs, Persians, Sumatrans, Javanese, Moluccans, Chinese, Moscovites & Tartars.

This is one map in a set of 4 I have in my collection – the others being Europe, Africa and Americas.
